Tom Amend, a pianist and composer, came to painting later in life. After doing graduate work in music composition at Brandeis University, Tom taught piano in the the Greater Lowell area. In the late 1990s, he began to study drawing and painting with Joy Buell at the DeCordova Museum School. The art workshops that Joy offered in France and Italy were significant catalysts for Tom. He moved to Gloucester and continued his study for 10 years with David Curtis at the Cox Reservation in Essex.

Tom’s paintings explore the marshes, quarries and woods of Cape Ann, the mountains of New Hampshire, and the coast of Maine. In 2018 and 2019, he was able to travel to the south of France again and paint in the regions of the Drôme and Provence.

Tom is a juried member of the North Shore Arts Association and the Rockport Art Association. He participated the Cape Ann Plein Air competition in 2019. His work is exhibited in galleries and other venues around Cape Ann. Despite the restrictions due to the pandemic, in 2020 he has shown work in Topsfield public library, the Glen Urquhart School in Beverly and in the Bookstore of Gloucester.

He lives in Gloucester with artist and chiropractor Elizabeth Bish whom he met while painting in France in 2005.
