Peter Bain grew up in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, spending summers on Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester. He earned his bachelors degree from Tufts University in 1992 and his M.B.A. from Babson College in 2004.

Since he was a boy, Peter has been passionate about drawing and design. In his free time Peter filled sketch books, experimented with different mediums, and made art. In 2011, a career change allowed him to fully pursue his interest in oil painting. He studied with Cape Ann artist Paul George for several years before staging, and selling out, his first local show.

The influence of Cape Ann is apparent in Peter’s work. Boats, rocks, sand, and ocean are featured predominantly in his paintings. Also, past artists of Cape Ann have had a large influence on him. Frederick Mulhaupt and Aldro Hibbard are amongst Peter’s favorites.

Peter’s career as an artist continues to rise. Since that first show in 2014, he has been regularly accepted into juried shows and invited to give gallery demonstrations. He is represented by Gallery Twist in Lexington, MA. He is a member of the North Shore Arts Association and the Rockport Art Association. He currently teaches oil painting at LexArt in Lexington, MA. In November 2020, Peter was honored to be featured in PleinAir Magazine’s article titled “11 Rising Stars to Collect Now”.

Peter has developed into a notably versatile painter; capturing landscapes, figures, still lives, and animals with equal aplomb. Peter lives in Lexington with his wife and two daughters.

“My goal with each painting is to articulate what is inspiring or moving about the scene or object before me. When I find that aspect I try to capture it, to amplify it on the canvas, and make everything else support it. The challenge is figuring out which features to move, to downplay, to amplify, to blur, or to highlight. I feel my best work not only is a beautiful image with an interesting composition, colors, and values….but one shows the painting process; the brush strokes, the dragged edges, smooth glazes, and thick paint.” ~Peter Bain
